Iranian short ‘Arezou’ to vie in Germany

Iran’s short film ‘Arezou’ is to compete at the 41st Max Ophüls Preis festival in Germany.

Iranian short film ‘Arezou’ has been selected to compete at the 41st Max Ophüls Preis festival in Germany.

Co-directed by Alireza Qasemi and Alireza Esfandiarnejad, ‘Arezou’ is an ARTE and SWR network coproduction.

A summary of the short film reads, “After the deterioration of her situation in Afghanistan, Arezou's mother flees to Germany to rejoin with her daughter who moved there years ago. However, when her application for asylum is rejected, they decide, based on the supposedly poor health of the mother, to appeal against the deportation.

On the day of the court-ordered medical checkup, Arezou injects her mother with a potent and dangerous drug designed to fool the medical tests. But while the plan seems to work, her mother's condition is deteriorating faster than expected. To save her without ruining their plan, Arezou must return to a safe place to inject the antidote to her mother, but the clock is ticking.”

The 41st edition of the German fest will host 149 films, 63 of which are running in competition categories.

The fest is slated for January 20-26, 2020.
